How To: Incorporate Family Heirlooms

Happy Monday!

We are so excited about this post. Sometimes we have clients that want to incorporate special items or family heirlooms into their space. It’s do-able! Here are some tips that we have:

Furniture. There are a couple different things that you can do with furniture that you want to incorporate:

  • Antique? It’s great to throw an antique into the mix of a design. Ex. have an old wood stool? Use it in your entry or as a side table by a chair.

  • Something you don’t like the look of but feel like you need to keep? Refinish it. There are so many possibilities on what you can create. Sometimes it’s just stripping it down to the original wood tone, sometimes you can reupholster a chair / other item and it makes all the difference.

  • Dressers / Cabinets etc. — like the dresser but feel like it doesn’t exactly match? Switch out the knobs to something that matches your space. (see knobs below).

Accessories. Accessories are a lot easier to make fit into a space!

  • Pictures — Pictures are so easy to incorporate! See how we incorporated family heirlooms in our Sylvia project below. Put them up in a gallery wall, on a nightstand (chose a frame that matches your room). A good tip: if you feel like the colors will make your space look less cohesive, turning your photo black & white is always a great option! (see picture frames below).

  • Something Random (Ex. Magnifiying Glass?) — We get a lot of random items passed down, that are still special to us. A coffee table or nightstand is a great place to style these things in!

  • Pressed Flowers / Anything flat — Frame it! You can turn it from sitting in storage to a special piece in your home. You could also frame any type of material, maybe even a page from a book! Special tip: try and mat it so that it looks more professional. (see wall frames below).

  • Books / Photo Albums — Old books are usually great as decor! Style them on a shelf, nightstand or side table! Photo albums: have a million photo albums? Style them the same way! If you don’t like the covers — get new ones and transfer all of the photos over! (pair them with some bookends — see below).
